About the temple

The Ranganathaswamy Temple occupies Srirangam island in the Kaveri, beside Tiruchirappalli. Secondary accounts dedicate it to Ranganatha, a reclining form of Vishnu, and describe the temple as a walled town of successive enclosures. No foundation year is established in this corpus. Samuel Bourne photographed the temple in 1869. That is the earliest photograph stored here.
