About the temple

The Sun Temple stands at Konark, on the coast of Odisha. Secondary accounts dedicate it to Surya and describe the standing mandapa as a thirteenth-century Eastern Ganga building. The tower over the sanctum is no longer standing. That account is not checked against an inscription edition here. William Henry Cornish photographed the mandapa for the Archaeological Survey in the 1880s and about 1890. Those are the earliest photographs stored here. Drawings from 1809 onward were not ingested.

Primary deity: Surya

Secondary accounts place the standing mandapa in the thirteenth century. That date is not checked against an inscription edition here. The stored photographs begin in the 1880s.
