About the temple

The Jagannath Temple stands in Puri. Published accounts dedicate it to Jagannath, a form of Vishnu. They associate the present complex with the Eastern Ganga ruler Anantavarman Chodaganga and treat the story of King Indradyumna as legend. This record keeps that distinction. The earliest photograph stored here shows the Lion Gate in 1868.

Primary deity: Jagannath

Secondary accounts begin the present complex in the twelfth century. That date is not checked against an inscription edition here. The Indradyumna story is tradition, not a dated building event.
